Trujillo has several statements that contrast between local and Spanish traditions, customs that over time have become part of our cultural identity.

These manifestations are transmitted from generation to generation, reflecting the feeling and fervor of the people of Trujillo, festivities that are expressed through different activities scheduled throughout the year.



Trujillo District
Date: Second half of January

This activity dates back to 1960, when president Juan Vargas Ganoza of the Club Libertad suggested a series of raffles and a Marinera contest to clean up the serious financial crisis of the institution.
The National Marinera Contest is an event full of color and beauty where participating couples look their best talent on the dance floor and adorn the Pe m,ruvian dance with a majestic and unforgettable grace.

Simbal District
Date: Last week of January

It is held at the end of January in the district of Simbal. The sacred image of the “Lord of Mercy” of Simbal is the reason for various religious and cultural activities in honor of his devotion.

Huanchaco District
Date: First week of January

The first party to be celebrated is the coronation of the Queen of Carnival, which takes place in conjunction with the already popular “Hawaiian Luau “.

There is a special day in which activities are organized for the children who also celebrate the carnival, for that day there is an impressive children’s parade with also the coronation of the queen of this category and a party for the children where the only requirement of entrance is dressing up for the occasion.

Moche District
Date: Second week  of January

The festival celebrates the coronation of the Queen of Carnival given the popular “Luau”.
There is a special day in which activities are scheduled and celebrate the carnival.

Trujillo Distrct
Date: February 14th

398 years ago,  the first earthquake occurred in the history of our city, a violent onslaught of nature that reduced debris to Trujillo and its surrounding counties, on February 14th.
As a result, 350 people died without help. This catastrophe gave rise to a special devotion to Saint Valentine on whose holy day the earthquake occurred and since then the city has put in advocacy of the Saint in his condition of Protector and Patron Saint of Trujillo.
St. Valentine was a priest of the third century who was ministering in Rome, who secretly held marriages for young lovers, since these celebrations had been banned so men would be soldiers without ties.

Moche District
Date: First week of March

This traditional fair is held at the Las Delicias beach in the district of Moche, Trujillo, La Libertad, in honor of St. Joseph, the Patron Saint of this district.
The fair was created by Ms. Mariana de Orbegoso in 1993, turning it into a colorful, cheerful and original party.
In this fair that tries to recreate Spanish customs, they offer potajes like paellas, callos a la española, soup of lentils, chickpeas, smoked hams  and typical drinks of the Iberian country.
The hosts of the celebration are colorful characters interpreted by locals: Mrs. Abanico who is the Mother of the fair, the mayor of the fair that carries the key and varayoc or cane, Mr. Jose and Ms. Josefa, and four majas: Mrs. Maja, Miss Maja, Youth and Child Maja representing the female beauty of Las Delicias.
One of the main attractions of this fair is the “Delicada”, released from heifers in the purest Pamplona style. There are also taverns, serenades, parade to the bullring, bull match and bullfights, etc.

Laredo District

Laredo suffers torrential rains for a week that affected all buildings of that time, the population implored the mercy of God on March 19th, 1891. It was designated as Patron of Laredo the Lord of Mercy on September 14th, 1891 .

Its official recognition was granted by Pope John Paul II with his Apostolic blessing found in the temple of Jesus and Mary of Laredo, commonly called Catholic Church, shines in his Greater Altar the crucified effigy of the Lord of Mercy.

The painting was placed on the left side of the Main Altar, next to the Sacristy. There is the Papal Resolution, as a testimony to eternity and the sculpture of the Lord of Mercy was once again placed in the right place, the High Altar.

Moche, Huanchaco, Salaverry and Trujillo District
Date: March – April

In Moche, the Ministry of Culture declared the Holy Week of Moche as Cultural Heritage of the Nation, because it is an important religious celebration, where traditional elements of the local culture are manifested, which constitutes a reference of identity for this population, Heir to an important tradition of rituality.

Moche District
Date: March – April

Tradition tells us that the image of San Isidro was brought from Spain by Fray Toribio de Mogrovejo and reached the Moche valley in 1578 on its way to Huaraz, where it had been destined, when passing through this valley and perceiving the pure air of its camp, the religious decided to leave it in the town of Moche, according to information spread by the Brotherhood of San Isidro Labrador of the Parish Santa Lucía de Moche.
From 1750, the Brotherhood of San Isidro establishes the pilgrimage where dozens of faithful mocheros take the saint in procession after a mass denominated of the “Good Journey” followed by a band of musicians, the “danza de los diablos”, servants of the saint who used to steal the best sowings of the countryside to offer them to the saint when the procession begins, in addition to the traditional Negras de Calazán.

Poroto District

It is held in Mochal, Dos de Mayo and Poroto.



Huanchaco y Salaverry District
Date: On June 29th

In Huanchaco the traditional procession in the patacho is realized (a huge caballito de totora) specially constructed for the saint and where it is walked in its central day blessing the waters of the beach accompanied by the faithful, especially fishermen in caballos de totora, with an exhibition of race.
In Salaverry, fishermen also honor the saint by asking him for a year of better work and protection of their lives in the waters of the sea.

Víctor Larco District

According to tradition, one Sunday fishermen went to the reeds of the old beach known as “La Bocana” and found three trunks that drew heavily to shore.
In one of the trunks they discovered healing clothes, in the second saint’s clothes and in the third trunk the image of the Lord in parts. They moved everything to the town where they put up and dressed the sacred image.
One of the men of the sea, on waking, exclaimed Lord of Huaman, save us! And they named him.

Trujillo District
Date: On July 28th and 29th

On  July 28th of every year, it commemorates the day when Peru gained its independence.
The liberator José de San Martín proclaimed the Independence of Peru on this date. The dawn of the 28 is greeted with a salvo of twenty-one cannon, like preamble of the ceremony.

Distrito de Poroto
Fechas: 15 de agosto

With great joy, the Poroto district annually celebrates its Patron Saint ‘s Festival in honor of the Virgen del Carmen where various artistic and cultural activities take place.

Another event that stands out clearly on the feast day is the Pineapple Fair, an event that attracts the interest of La Libertad population, being this district major producer of pineapple throughout the region.
The activities are: artistic and cultural open- air dance , fireworks, popular festival and pineapple fair.

Poroto District

Every year the Regional Pineapple Fair is held in Poroto (Trujillo), which takes place in the Main Square of Poroto, which offers gastronomic festivals based on this fruit, as well as mountain tourism.
Authorities and the organizing committee of the fair highlight the microclimate of Poroto, Simbal and other districts east of Trujillo, which makes it possible to produce this fruit that is characterized by its unique flavor in the north of the country.
The production of pineapple of Poroto reaches the 10 thousand kilos per campaign that go to the markets of Lima and the North of Peru.

This festival alluding to the spring is considered one of the most representative of the city of Trujillo and that lives up to the nickname that takes with its of City of the Eternal Spring.
The festival is also one of the most important in the country and attracts the assistance of thousands of tourists from various parts of the world.
The main attraction of this festival is a traditional corso or spring parade, in which queens of beauty participate mainly of the clubs of lions of different parts of the continent; And the allegorical parade in which they parade in floats that compete in the decoration of the same by the award to the best allegorical car.

Trujillo District
Date: October

In the city of Trujillo, the official image of the Cristo Moreno is in the Santo Domingo temple and every October, it walks through the streets of the northern city, surrounded by incense and candles, along with vendors of the turron of Doña Pepa.

For 21 years, the Lord of Miracles has also been considered as the Jury and Protector of the city of Trujillo, a title conferred thanks to the impressive number of faithful who accompany the religious demonstrations. In every corner, the city lives its party.

The purple ornaments remember the characteristic color of a festivity that has no borders and expresses itself with indescribable passion.
That is why, during the processions, each one honors in his own way: some with silent prayers, others with enticing songs and the most audacious to the rhythm of a salty sailor executed with a donation for the pleasure of those present.

Huanchaco District
Date: November

The story goes back to the year 1 534, when the Spanish missionary Fray Alonso de Escarcena proposes to strengthen the work of evangelization in lands of northern of Peru with a religious image that serves as a model for the conversion of the indigenous.
It was the King Charles V who responded to the request with a beautiful sculpture based on his mother, Juana, and sent by sea from the port of Cadiz. Precisely during this journey has documented the first prodigy of the celestial intercessor when the ship about to wreck with the image inside was saved after the repeated prayers of the crew. From that moment it was decided to change the initial dedication of Virgen de la Candelaria by that of Maria de la Candelaria del Socorro.

The huanchaquera tradition also tells that miracles continued with the effigy on earth. During the mass of presentation to the people who came from the spa, a woman, mute by birth, was able to speak receiving the blessing of the mother of Christ and then raising a Hail Mary to the amazement of those present.

Moche District

Together with San Isidro, she is the patroness of Moche and as such she is revered by the whole population.
Its central day is on December 13th and like San Isidro is strolled throughout the town and is accompanied by Gypsies, Coyas, blacks and devils.

Laredo District
Date: December

The Brotherhood of Virgen de la Puerta of Laredo was formed on February 5th, 1985. As  initiative of a group of enthusiastic ladies from Laredo on the occasion of the visit to Laredo of the image of the Virgen de la Puerta of Otuzco, on January 5th of that year, spending the night in this city.
The image of the Virgin came from Trujillo to where she had been transferred on the occasion of the arrival of His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Trujillo District
Date: On December 29th

Trujillo became the first independent city in the northern of Peru. From the 22nd of December of 1820. The city was free of the realistic power and agreed to celebrate it the day 29th with the raising of the national pavilion and the placidity of the town.
However, a few insurgents from Lambayeque, anxious for priority, advanced their proclamation on the night of 27th, this being in secret and in private house, when still threatened the realists were lurking.
Likewise, the proclamation of Lambayeque  have not the consent of the people and it was ratified, separately, twice on December 31st and this time publicly. But only on January 14th the town authorities took possession of their new posts.

Thus it is clear that the council of Trujillo was the first to proclaim officially and publicly its independence in the north with no obstacles to its legitimacy.

As it is remembered, for 19 years the festivity has become a tradition for the families that celebrate the arrival of Christmas.
In addition, the last year through Resolution of the Mayor’s Office No. 1314 – 2015 – MPT, the Festival of Lights and Colors was declared an activity of cultural and artistic interest of the city and incorporated it into the Cultural Tourism Agenda of the commune.

Salaverry District
Date: On December 8th

This Holy Virgin is the Patroness of the Port of Salaverry, and every year the brotherhood of the Virgin celebrates her patron saint’s festivity, and following with tradition every 5 years our Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate Conception patroness of the Port of Salaverry embarks on her pilgrimage journey towards to the brother town of Moche, in this pilgrimage the dances of the gypsies, devils and negritos participate.
