It is located in the district of Magdalena de Cao, Province of Ascope. It is part of the Moche Route which begins from Trujillo.
It is one of the most important religious and political centers of the Moche culture (100-750 A.D.). It is composed of Huaca Prieta, Huaca Cao Viejo and Huaca Cortada, of which only the Huaca Cao Viejo is open for sightseeing tour. It is next to the impressive Museum of the Lady of Cao form the largest archaeological complex located in the Chicama valley.
