Huaca Toledo: Constructive process

The constructive process of the Toledo huaca pyramid complex was not only composed of adobe, as was originally believed, but also of other elements such as stone and mud (mixture of earth and gravel), which represents an atypical fact in Chimú architecture.
This is the first conclusion reached by a team of specialists from the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex Special Project who are contributing to the completion of the research and conservation work in the aforementioned site. Huaca Toledo in terms of appearance, is a truncated pyramid that has the sides or sides in a staggered way, in addition it does not have the walls painted or reliefs.

70-1-620x350Also, two staircases have been found on the north side that allow you to ascend to the top of the huaca, but as a result of the destruction of the place, it has not been possible to determine how it was it.
The person in charge of the Huaca Toledo Project, archaeologist Jorge Meneses Bartra, informed that the research and conservation tasks were first addressed in the internal architecture registry in the 1st section of the huaca (it was broadened to a greater extent by the huaqueros). Then in the exhibition of the west facade of the huaca. With the degree of destruction that it has, the removal of stone and adobes has been an arduous task, but in the end it was possible to expose its very well preserved structures.

“The success of these works in Toledo, is that is being excavated, with scientific rigor, for the first time a mound Pyramidal Chimu, which we did not know much about, but yes of the Moche, which are earlier. These new data will contribute to expand on the way Toledo was built, the function of this huaca, the role of this truncated pyramid within Chan Chan, the role of the people who directed the ceremonies and the relationship he had with the Chimu sovereigns “ said archaeologist Jorge Meneses.

What follows now is to finish the preservation works in Huaca Toledo, in order to avoid that the current climatic conditions damage the intervened zones.

Social component
The Huaca Toledo Project also has a social component, which seeks to sensitize the population about this project and its importance for citizenship. That is why several awareness-raising talks were held, bulletins were presented, as well as guided visits to Huaca Toledo by students and families living in areas near Chan Chan.

Information
Huaca Toledo corresponds to the Late Chimu period 1350-1400 approximately. It is a staggered building of more than twenty meters high and ninety meters per side, built with a system different from other ceremonial sites of the north coast, since its core is made up of stone and gravel cells, plated with adobes to obtain steps finely plastered.
The total investigation of Huaca Toledo has a projection of 31 months, distributed in 4 seasons. The total budget allocated for this season, the third, is one million 854 thousand 882 soles and considered 10 months of intervention.
